How can we support First Nation & Indigenous languages? 
  • Acknowledge the treaty territory we live in.

  • Acknowledge and understand the First Nation and Indigenous languages spoken in the area.

  • Become familiar & support the First Nation and Indigenous local community events and initiatives that support First Nation and Indigenous cultures and languages.

  • Become familiar & know with the Indigenous language schools and programs in your area.

    • How can you include them in your class, organization or school?

  • Begin your journey to Indigenous Ways of Knowing, below is a helpful website to help:

  • Incorporate First Nation & Indigenous literacy at your school or organization. 

  • Engage and participate.

  • Invite local Indigenous Elders and local First Nation and Indigenous speakers into the classroom, or your community program.

  • Learn the local First Nation and Indigenous languages greetings and language by attending online and/or person sessions or courses.

  • Research and incorporate Indigenous programs with the consultation of local First Nation and Indigenous Elders and community members (if possible). 

  • Support and attend local Indigenous events.  

  • Support local Indigenous efforts in their journey to preserving Indigenous languages. This could include helping with awareness, donations, fundraising efforts, Elder support, teacher support & technical support.

  • Support social media efforts by becoming familiar or the organization in your area and support them online. Furthermore, seek out websites and app's that teach First Nation & Indigenous languages.
